POEMS GIVE ROOM FOR DIVERSITY IN EXPRESSION OF THOUGHTS AND IDEAS - OLUGBUYIRO SUCCESS

 


Olugbuyiro Success is a poet and currently a 300 level Student of the department of Physiology, University of Ibadan. In this interview with Wole Adedoyin, the winner of the 2020 Food For Thought Essay Contest shared with us briefly, her literary life and other facts surrounding her writing career.

 

SYNW: WHY ARE YOU A POET?

 

OS: I am a poet because poems give room for diversity in expression of thoughts and ideas. Also, poetry is a tasking genre which makes my writings better.

 

SYNW: WHAT POETS DO YOU ADMIRE?

 

OS: Wole Soyinka, Niyi Osundare, JP Clark, Anne Taylor,

 

SYNW: WHAT INSPIRES YOU?

 

OS: Life, The nature, dynamism and experience of life

 

SYNW: TELL US ABOUT A NORMAL WORKING DAY

 

OS: For now, my normal working day revolves round my academic project.

 

SYNW: HOW DO YOU WRITE?

 

OS: I write in bits and pieces as an idea struck me or a thought flows. Then I sit to expansiate that thought on my own before sourcing external knowledge.

 

SYNW: WHAT’S YOUR THOUGHT PROCESS BEHIND A POEM?

 

OS: Ability to be able to relate with the poem theme, then I write out  what I feel per time then I organize the thoughts in lines and stanzas.

 

SYNW: DESCRIBE YOUR ROUTE TO BEING PUBLISHED…

 

OS: I submit my works in anthologies or "call to submissions" for now.

 

SYNW: WHAT’S YOUR ADVICE TO AN ASPIRING POET?

 

OS: To read and reread vastly, to write and keep writing willingly

 

SYNW: WHAT (IF ANY) SORTS OF EDITORIAL CHANGES DID THE MANUSCRIPT GO THROUGH? DID YOU WORK THROUGH THESE WITH YOUR AGENT AND/OR EDITORS WITHIN THE PUBLISHING HOUSE?

 

OS: None yet.

 

SYNW: FINAL QUESTION (PROMISE!): DO YOU HAVE ANY ADVICE FOR THE YET-TO-BE-PUBLISHED WRITERS READING THIS?

 

OS: Being a yet-to-be-published writer myself, I would advise that we keep at what we want to do consistently, there is always light at the tunnel end.

 

SYNW: TALK TO US ABOUT YOUR WRITING ROUTINE; WHAT’S A TYPICAL WRITING DAY FOR YOU?

 

OS: I make sure I keep updating myself with books on genres available, I check for online contest that challenges me into writing, also I daily write to improve myself and input my diary.

 

SYNW: WHERE DO YOU WRITE FROM?

 

OS: Ibadan, Oyo state

 

SYNW: ON THIS TOPIC, WHAT ARE YOU DOING THE BUILD A PLATFORM AND GAIN READERSHIP?

 

OS: I am still honing my skills. I want to learn the fundamentals involved in building a quality and consistent platform. I am presently going through a course on that.
